This week, we celebrated International Women's Day in conjunction with the Day Without a Woman strike. While the strike encouraged women to abstain from a day of work, others supported the cause through their work. Here are some food-based activism events that caught our eye this week. Spoiler alert: Fund-raising and cocktails is a fantastic pairing.
The Able Baker, a bakery in Maplewood, New Jersey, celebrated IWD by offering coffee to female costumers for 79 cents to the dollar. The bakery also frosted themed sugar cookies.
Eat Offbeat, the refugee-focused delivery service, is releasing a cookbook and launched a Kickstarter to help solidify the deal. The book will feature 80 recipes from 20 chefs from 15 countries. Ten percent of proceeds will go to the International Rescue Committee.
Across the pond, Mumford and Sons performed at a fund-raiser for The Felix Project, a food waste charity in London. The concert raised over £45,000 (about $54,000 USD).
Andrew Tarlow's Diner is hosting a "Drink and Call" night on March 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., during which diners will be encouraged to call their local representatives. All proceeds from Aperol cocktails will be donated to the National Immigration Law Center.
