Oh bacon, you’ve gone too far. Recent scientific proof may support that there may be a serious reason to avoid processed meats, such as bacon, sausage and ham — and it has nothing to do with obesity or heart disease. From The Telegraph comes the news that a study has found men who regularly eat these products have significantly lower amounts of normal sperm compared with those who limit their intake. Yes, you’re going to want to stop throwing bacon into just about everything.
The study conducted by researchers at Harvard University (yeah, now you know it’s legit) examined the diets of 156 men in couples suffering problems conceiving, measuring the size and shape of their sperm. Those who ate the equivalent of less than a thin slice of bacon per day had 30% more normal sperm than those who ate larger quantities.
The researchers also observed a positive correlation between white fish consumption and higher normal sperm counts. Yes, we know which aisle we’ll be hitting up this evening in the grocery store…even if we did just amuse ourselves by writing the word “sperm” five times in a food-related article.
