Is The Smalt Really All That Smart?

Did you ever wish your salt shaker did more than just dispense salt? No? Are you sure?

What if we told you there's a shaker out there that plays music, dispenses measured amounts of salt, connects to the Amazon Alexa via Bluetooth, displays different colored "mood lights" and tracks your sodium consumption? Befuddled? Us too. The Smalt device — short for smart salt — recently launched its Indiegogo campaign to get manufacturing going. It also comes with an app that allows users to shake or pinch however much digital salt their heart desires.

Smalt's capabilities are essentially already covered by Alexa, other than measuring and dispensing salt, of course — she doesn't have hands. If you don't have an Alexa to play music, you probably already have a speaker system you're fairly happy with, and is frankly, probably better, like a Sonos speaker, record player, TV or even a phone. You don't have to play music on the thing that seasons your food. And as for the mood lighting, a Himalayan salt lamp can take care of that.
