Grant Achatz's Cool Cocktail Infuser Is Now Available For Home Mixologists
When Martin Kastner of the Chicago-based design firm Crucial Detail created The Porthole, a see-through infusion vessel for Grant Achatz's new cocktail bar, he didn't anticipate the kind of frenzy it quickly set off, turning cocktail geeks and design snobs into common thieves. The Porthole, designed to showcase all its contents while infusing and pouring the liquid, was hand-crafted in small batches exclusively for Chicago's The Aviary. But it wasn't long before some went missing.
Thanks to a crafty Kickstarter campaign, the Porthole will be available for legitimate home use this fall for as little as $75 per unit (Related: How To Infuse Vodka, Tequila And Bourbon). Constructed from glass and stainless steel, the vessel is a nod to submarine portholes and the fantastical underwater world of Jules Verne. Not a mixologist? Use it to infuse oils, teas, lemonade, blends for dressings. There's nothing that won't look cool in this thing.
